What Is HDMI?
HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is an uncompressed, all-digital audio and video interface format. It lets you connect any digital audio and video source, such as a DVD player or set-top box, to any digital audio and video display device such as a digital television (DTV), with a single connecting cable. The single cable carries both audio and video.
HDMI supports standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements and requirements. An example of an HDMI jack is below.
Important: If you connect your TV to a video source (a DVD player, home theater system, set top box, etc.) with HDMI, you must set the audio output of the source to PCM audio. If the audio output is set to Bitstream, you will not get any sound. See the user's manual of your audio source for instructions on how to set the audio output to PCM audio.
Also Important: Any source you connect to your TV using HDMI must be HDCP compliant. If it is not, the picture will be distorted and in many cases unwatchable.
