How Do I Enable HDTV On My HIgh Definition TV?

To enable HDTV on your HDTV, you must have at least one of the following:

A standard outdoor antenna to receive the HDTV signals. If your TV has a built in HDTV tuner, you attach the antenna directly to the TV. If your TV does not have a built in HDTV tuner, you must attach the antenna to a terrestrial digital set top box, and then attach the set top box to your TV. You also need an HDTV over-the-air (OTA) broadcaster within range of your television.

A cable TV company that broadcasts HDTV programs and a digital cable set top box

A cable TV company that broadcasts HDTV programs and a CableCard if your TV is CableCard ready

A satellite dish and digital satellite set top box.

Once you have one of the four sets of items above installed, you should be able to receive HDTV broadcasts. If you choose the cable TV or satellite dish options, most likely the cable TV company or the satellite TV company will install their equipment for you and configure your TV to receive HDTV broadcasts. If you choose the CableCard option, most likely your cable company will send you the CableCard, and you will install it into the CableCard slot on your TV.

If you choose the outdoor antenna option, you will have to install the antenna and configure the TV yourself. If your TV has a built in HDTV tuner, you should follow the directions in your TV user's manual on memorizing channels to configure your TV for HDTV. If your TV does not have a built in HDTV tuner and you installed a terrestrial digital set top box or a satellite set top box, follow the directions in the set top box user's guide. If you installed a CableCard, follow the directions in your TV user's manual to memorize the channels.

Note 1: After you have connected an HDTV/Digital source to your TV, you select that source for viewing by pushing the Source button on your remote or on your television.

Note 2: If you have an outdoor antenna, you are in range of both standard and HDTV over-the-air broadcasters, and you have followed the directions for channel memorization, your TV will automatically shift between standard and HDTV displays as you change channels from a standard channel to an HDTV channel.
